Lutein is a fat soluble antioxidant in the carotenoid family (a group of naturally occurring fat-soluble pigments found in plants). Lutein is the primary carotenoid present in the central area of the retina called the macula.Lutein is found in the dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, plus various fruits and corn.

Free Lutein and Lutein fatty acid esters are the common carotenoids found. Free Lutein and Lutein Ester found in marigold flower petals, is chemically bound to various types of fatty acids.
